The perfect balance between sweetness, body and character

Neither a light lager nor a dark roasted stout, amber beer finds its place in that subtle in-between where the roundness of malt meets the freshness of hops. It is a beer of the heart, of comfort, one that appeals as much to the curious as to the enthusiast. In its alcohol-free version, it keeps everything that makes it charming: warm aromas, a lovely copper colour, a full yet balanced palate.

A play of malts

The flavour profile of an amber beer rests above all on the choice of malts. Here, it is often caramel malts, biscuit malts, sometimes lightly roasted, that give the beer its amber colour and its characteristic notes: toasted bread, hazelnut, brown sugar, even maple syrup. The bitterness is present, but discreet, just enough to balance the richness of the malt and give structure on the palate.

In the best versions, this sweetness never tips into sugary. It is round, enveloping, almost indulgent, but always refreshing.

Comfortable beers, but never heavy

Amber beers are easy-going.
They warm without overwhelming, they bring a gentle complexity, without exuberance. They can accompany simple dishes such as a quiche, a smoked hummus, a vegetable gratin or a cheese board. We also enjoy them at the end of the day, at room temperature or slightly chilled, as a warm moment of pause.
They have a little "cocooning" quality that makes them charming: beers for fireside evenings, late summer, quiet conversations.

A diversity of underappreciated styles

Under the label "amber", there is in reality a wide palette of styles, sometimes quite different:

- Malty ales, English-inspired, with a beautiful cereal roundness
- Amber lagers, drier and fresher, with roasted aromas
- Beers with gentle spices, flirting with cinnamon, cloves, tonka bean
- Hopped ambers, where the roundness of the malt is awakened by a floral or resinous hop

At Gueule de Joie, we have chosen not to confine these beers to a single definition. We select them for their balance, their personality, their ability to seduce without imposing. And above all for their ability to reveal something new with every sip.

The art of malt

What we appreciate in amber beers is the care given to the work of malt. Often eclipsed by star hops in the world of IPAs, malt reclaims its full place here: you smell it, you taste it, you breathe it in. It structures the beer, gives it its body, its colour, its identity.
In a world of intense sensations, amber beer offers a return to a form of measured gentleness. It is a beer of flavour, more than of sensation.

To be rediscovered

Amber beer has sometimes suffered from a slightly old-fashioned image, or one that is too sweet. The alcohol-free versions we select prove the opposite: they are modern, well crafted, sometimes even gastronomic. They do not seek to dazzle, but to satisfy. And that is precisely why we love them
